Working Cats
What Is a Working Cat?
A working cat is an outdoor cat who isn't suited to life as an indoor pet. These cats are often feral or only partly socialized, and they do best with space and independence. In return for food, water, and shelter, they help keep mice and rats away from barns, shops, and other properties.
Who They Are
Independent by nature. Most working cats prefer little or no human contact. Being kept indoors in a small space causes them stress.
Natural pest control. Their presence and hunting instincts keep rodents away without the need for poisons that can harm pets, wildlife, and people.
Cats who need a different path. Working cats are healthy cats who can't return to where they were found and aren't a good fit for traditional adoption. Every working cat is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and in good health before placement.
Where Working Cats Thrive
Barns and farms, where rodents damage grain and animal feed
Warehouses and shops, where large spaces need safe, chemical-free pest control
Nurseries, gardens, and breweries, where keeping rodents out matters
What Working Cats Need
Food and fresh water every day. Hunting alone isn't enough. A well-fed cat stays on the property and stays healthy.
Safe shelter. A dry, protected space away from weather and predators.
Time to settle in. New working cats spend a few weeks confined in a secure space, like a large crate or tack room, so they learn their new home is a safe place to stay before they're released.
