Caring for Your Working Cats
Bringing Your Working Cat to Their New Home
1. Set up the space before the cat arrives. Choose a quiet, secure spot like a tack room, shed, or large crate inside a barn. Include food, water, a litter box, and a covered box or bed where the cat can hide.
2. Keep the cat confined for two to four weeks. This teaches the cat that your property is home and where meals come from. Cats released too early often leave.
3. Feed at the same time every day. A steady routine builds trust. Speak quietly when you visit so the cat learns your voice.
4. Keep the space clean and calm. Scoop the litter box daily and keep children, dogs, and loud activity away during this time.
5. Open the door and let the cat choose. When confinement ends, open the door and walk away. Don't chase or force the cat out. Some cats leave right away, and others wait days.
6. Keep the feeding spot the same. Continue daily food and water in the same place. Many cats disappear for a few days after release and come back at mealtime.
